Are All Polarized Sunglasses UV Protected?

Last updated on 1 September 2019 By andrea Leave a Comment

Are All Polarized Sunglasses UV Protected?
It can’t be understated how important UV protection is for your skin and eyes.
No matter what kind of activity you try to use glasses for, having UV protection is essential. This is why UV protection is a common feature in all the top-rated fishing sunglasses.

While a large number of sunglasses include UV protection by default, this doesn’t mean all sunglasses are UV protected.
There are many sunglasses out there that don’t give you any UV protection whatsoever.

Do All Polarized Glasses Protect You from UV Radiation?

Polarized glasses are some of the popular sunglasses out there. They’re not only functional but also stylish and fashionable. They provide added protection against severe light and reduce overall glare. But are they good for UV protection?

This may come as a surprise, but not all polarized glasses provide active UV protection. While polarized glasses and UV protection are often paired together in most high-quality glasses, this does not make them mutually inclusive. There are a lot of cheap polarized sunglasses out there that don’t have any UV protection.

How to Tell Which Polarized Sunglasses Have UV Protection

Since not every pair of polarized sunglasses has UV protection, it can be hard to tell which ones do and which ones don’t. This can be disconcerting for anyone looking for decent UV protection in their sunglasses. It isn’t impossible, however. There are different ways to tell if your polarized sunglasses have any UV protection on them. Here are some basic aspects you can focus on:

Check to See If the Glasses Specify 100% UV Protection

UV protection works at various levels. Even a thick piece of glass can reduce the UV content by a certain extent. A lot of non-UV protection sunglasses will dissipate a small amount of UV, but this doesn’t mean total protection. Always make sure to check that the sunglasses offer 100% protection against UV rays.

Make Sure the Glasses Have a UV Coating

Glasses made from the CR-39 plastic polymer will offer minimal UV protection. For them to protect your eyes in an effective way, they need to have a UV coating on them. This is why you should make sure that a UV coating is mentioned by the manufacturer if you are opting for such sunglasses.

Invest in a Reliable Brand from a Reputable Source

If all else fails, you can always buy a pair of sunglasses from a decent brand. The most popular sunglass brands include UV protection in their sunglasses by default. Make sure you buy these glasses from a reputable source like a major outlet or online store.
If you buy these glasses from a beachside vendor, you’re more than likely to get low-quality glasses and counterfeits. These glasses will not be as good as the original products. Thus, you will not get UV protection that is as good many of the top-tier brands of sunglasses out there.
